چکیده
Abstract. A polarization diversity elastic backscatter lidar was deployed on the equatorial island of Palau in February and March 2016 framework EU StratoClim project. The system operated unattended Atmosferic Observatory from 15 to 25 during nighttime. Each profile extends ground 30 km height. Here, dataset is presented discussed terms temperature structure upper troposphere–lower stratosphere (UTLS) obtained co-located radiosoundings. cold-point tropopause (CPT) higher than 17 km. During campaign, several high-altitude clouds were observed, peaking approximately 3 below CPT. Their occurrence associated with cold anomalies troposphere (UT). Conversely, when warm UT occurred, presence cirrus restricted a 5 thick layer centred Thin subvisible (SVC) frequently detected close particle depolarization ratios these generally lower values clouds. CPT showed correlation likely triggered by stratospheric wave activity penetrating UT. back-trajectories study revealed thermal convective history compatible outflow formation for most clouds, suggesting that majority air masses related had encountered convection past reached minimum its transport less 48 h before observation. subset SVC low no sign significative recent uplifting may have originated situ.

Comparison of In-situ Balloon-borne and Lidar Measurement of Cirrus Clouds
A series of in-situ balloon-borne experiments conducted at Kiruna, Sweden (68 °N), is studying uppertropospheric, cold ice clouds in arctic latitudes. Experiments are launched from Esrange Space Center and collect ice particles with an in-situ imaging instrument. One of the aims with these measurements is to improve satellite remote sensing of cold ice clouds. Such clouds can be observed by lid...
متن کاملClassification of particle effective shape ratios in cirrus clouds based on the lidar depolarization ratio.
A shape classification technique for cirrus clouds that could be applied to future spaceborne lidars is presented. A ray-tracing code has been developed to simulate backscattered and depolarized lidar signals from cirrus clouds made of hexagonal-based crystals with various compositions and optical depth, taking into account multiple scattering. This code was used first to study the sensitivity ...
متن کاملFirst observations of noctilucent clouds by lidar at Svalbard, 78 N
In summer 2001 a potassium lidar was installed near Longyearbyen (78 N) on the north polar island of Spitsbergen which is part of the archipelago Svalbard. At the same place a series of meteorological rockets (“falling spheres”, FS) were launched which gave temperatures from the lower thermosphere to the stratosphere. The potassium lidar is capable of detecting noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and of ...
متن کاملBackscatter Color Ratios of Cirrus Clouds Measured by the Cloud Physics Lidar
The Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL) is a threewavelength, polarization-sensitive elastic backscatter lidar that flies aboard NASA’s high-altitude ER2 research aircraft. This work presents spatial and optical analyses of the combined cirrus cloud measurements acquired by CPL during eight separate field campaigns occurring from 2002 to 2007. Particular attention is given to the retrieval and characteri...
